Life will be riddled with troubles (this is to be expected) and most of us learn to accept and overcome such obstacles in our lifetime. However, as we can see from the rising statistics of stress related sickness, suicide and depression, not everyone is adept in facing a problem.
In the United States, one out of every four adults suffers from depression and depression has been named the leading cause of disability (WHO, 2008). Depression seriously impedes a person’s growth and development and degrades the kind of life a person may have. It leads to the diminishing of a person’s self confidence, strenuous social and family relations, and debilitates social development. Depression not only affects the person inflicted but everyone around him as well.

Studies published in the American Journal for Clinical Nutrition has shown that Vitamin B Complex supplements prevent depression. Dr. Janine Walker and her colleagues found that the combination of Vitamin B-12 and folic acid can possibly lower the risk of depression. Walker recommends this intervention as it is inexpensive. In their study, intake of folic acid and Vitamin B-12 showed improvements in cognitive functions, a sign that it can help prevent depression.
In another study, Dr. Kimberly Skarupski and her colleagues confirmed these findings, this time with the combination of Vitamin B-6 and B-12.
In their study, they found that a high intake of Vitamin B-6 and B-12 reduces the symptoms of depression among adults. Skarupski said symptoms of depression are seen to further plunge when folic acid is taken.
Vitamin B-12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that helps in the normal function of the brain and the nervous system. It also helps in the formation of blood and is also used in the treatment of cyanide poisoning. Folic acid is a B-vitamin (B-9), which is more associated with the prevention of neural deformities during pregnancy. It is also associated in the reduction of stroke and heart disease.
On the other hand, Vitamin B-6, or pyridoxine, affects metabolism, histamine synthesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, hemoglobin synthesis, and gene expression. It is commonly found in meats, whole grain products, vegetables, nuts and bananas.B-vitamins can be naturally found in whole grains, potatoes, bananas, lentils, chili peppers, tempeh, beans, nutritional yeast, brewer’s yeast and molasses. It can also be found in dietary supplements readily available in the market.
Research on the effects of Vitamin B Complex Supplements on depression is promising, but dietary supplements should be coupled with a change in lifestyle as well to prevent prolonging depression.
